Nissan 370Z Hydro by Marangoni

This is the 2010 show car of the Italian tire manufacturer Marangoni, which is styled by TRC Italia. Called the 370 Z-Hydro, the car features a body kit inspired by Nissan GT-R consisting of a revised bumper with large air intakes at front, side skirts and a carbon rear wing and diffuser as well as carbon mirrors.

The Hydro in the car’s name refers to the new Hydro-drive-system installed on its engine, which they say reduces the emissions and fuel consumption. The concept is that by injecting a kind of catalytic gas into the intake manifolds, unburned hydrocarbons will be cut to almost zero!

But the main feature of the this 370 is the reason it’s made in the first place! To show off Marangoni’s new “M-Power Blue” 20-inch high performance tires wrapped around 10 double-spoke Oxrock Black rims. The Z-Hydro also has a KW coil-over suspension system which drops it by 4 inches, and KW HLS hydraulic lift system which can raise the front axle by 5 inches. It is fitted with 400mm brake discs and 12-piston calipers as well.

For the interior, you get sport seats and instrument panels with leather and alcantara upholstery and blue trimming for the dashboard.

Nissan releases new minicar Roox (UK)

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd announces the release of the Roox minicar, which goes on sale today at Nissan dealers nationwide.

The most distinctive features of the new Nissan Roox are its spacious interior, elegant design and convenient features, such as the double sliding rear doors that provide for convenient entry and exit and a large, low-floor height luggage space. The name Roox was coined from “room” and “max” to convey its exceptionally roomy interior.

While Roox’s comfortable family car cabin is designed to change people’s impression of minicar interiors in Japan, its exterior design also brings an eye-catching new face to the segment. Roox incorporates the design characteristics of Nissan’s Highway Star Minivan series, including Serena and Elgrand, providing a striking and elegant appearance.

The new Roox is also designed to offer efficient operation and performance. The K6A engine-equipped models (except for turbo models) deliver both excellent environmental and driving performance, achieving top-in-class1 fuel efficiency of 21.5km/l2. With a 15% or 20% improvement in fuel economy over the 2010 standards, these models are certified SU-LEV3 (vehicles which emit 75% fewer emissions than the levels mandated by Japan's 2005 exhaust emission regulations). Roox non-turbo models qualify for Japan's preferential tax scheme for environment-friendly vehicles, with automobile acquisition tax and automobile weight tax reduced by 50%.

Nissan collectively refers to models that qualify for these preferential tax breaks as the Nissan ECO Series (NECO Series). Including Roox, 18 models4 have already qualified. Nissan hopes to stimulate consumer demand for eco-friendly vehicles by offering customers a broad selection of products to choose from.

Production Nissan Qazana will bring new era of design, love it or hate it reaction

By this point in the year it's not as easy to find worthy entries for Understatement of the Year – there is just so much competition – but a comment made about the Nissan Qazana certainly qualifies: a Nissan insider told UK-based Autocar that the gelatinous crossover "will split opinion."

And not only will you get your chance to buy one in 2012, statements by Nissan indicate that you'll have your chance to buy other cars that also look like it. Nissan's customer research appears to have also given the company every reason for believing "it will be a success," and that this will give the brand "a more attractive and emotional appeal in the future."

Nissan hasn't said what Qazana design features might be seen on other cars, and we don't know if we're ready to even think about that possibility. Europeans have three years to get ready for it, and we in the States have that time to prepare for an Altima that looks like Admiral Ackb

The Legendary Nissan GT-R

Thomas Falkiner gets behind the wheel of Japan's banzai road warrior

Even when viewed from the remote surreality of Google Earth, Tokyo – a regimented sprawl of concrete, glass and steel – has the power to completely fry your circuitry. The biggest city in the world with a population of 34.2-million people, this unique Japanese Metropolis is a maker and breaker of dreams, a financial powerhouse and a factory of trends that never closes. Mouse the slider bar, zoom in between the buildings, and in the eerie stillness of that hi-res satellite image, you can sense an intangible energy flowing through those streets; an invisible force driving every inhabitant. The capital of fashion and technical innovation by day, at night Tokyo hands itself over to a variety of strange and exotic subcultures. While many go unnoticed – obscured by doors, hidden away in basements – one was once brazen enough to take to this city’s never-ending expressways; ribbons of asphalt that snake lazily through tunnels, over water, next to skyscrapers.

Ruled by secrecy, followers of a warrior-like code, members of the infamous Mid Night Club met in the anonymity of neon-lit gas stations at the witching hour and then raced what they bought to another some distance away.Whipping through the urban nocturne at speeds well over 300km/h, catching a glimpse of these automotive anarchists was rare, almost impossible. But those who did reported sighting a smorgasbord of expensive exotics. From Ferrari F40s to heavily modified Porsche 911 Turbos, this insane collective drove the kind of cars us mortals can only dream about. Yet, in amongst all the thoroughbred imports, a good portion of Mid Night Club’s more patriotic members preferred to pocket the keys of local sheet metal. And, synonymous with the land of the rising sun, a Nissan Skyline GT-R was normally their weapon of choice; an imposing two-door sedan with proper giant slaying credentials rippling beneath its proletariat skin.

Already furiously fast right off the showroom floor, the well-moneyed lawyers, doctors, bankers – and sometimes suspected villains – who took to the streets of Tokyo after dark made their Nissans even quicker, more brutal. With true Japanese fanaticism and plenty of surplus Yen, GT-R bonnets soon opened up onto an organised jumble of pipes, turbochargers, nitrous oxide injectors and various electric doodads that allowed them to outrun almost anything – even the police. Much like the early Harley-Davidsons ridden by the Hells Angels in 50s, these machines rapidly achieved notoriety not only in Tokyo and Japan but around the world too. The advent of YouTube and the creation of video games like Gran Turismo helped crank up the heat of Skyline GT-R fever and by the late 90s every petrolhead worth their driving boots was versed in this vehicle’s mythical qualities.

Fast-forward to the present-day, however, and you’ll find things have changed dramatically. Firstly, due to a fateful high-speed accident involving the Bosozoku motorcycle gang in 1999, the legendary Mid Night Club has subsequently dissolved, disappearing back into the darkness as mysteriously as it first arrived. And secondly one of the machines that helped take this institution to the heights of infamy no longer wears the Skyline badge. But be that as it may, the GT-R has evolved into something far more special. No longer just a tarted-up version of a family sedan, it finally has the ballsy swagger of a true supercar; a bespoke Lamborghini rival born in the wind tunnel and laser-cut with all sorts of aggressive, wind-cheating geometry.

Slicing through the air quicker than a greasy Ninjato sword, the new GT-R shows up the old Skyline with a hand-built engine, plasma coated cylinder bores – whatever that means – and, in the case of cars finished off in Super Silver, a fastidious man who polishes every one of its three layers of paint. Already, like similar tax write-offs from the towns of Maranello and Sant'Agata Bolognese, this extreme level of manufacturing detail and care immediately throws the GT-R into a whole new stratosphere of coolness; a niche occupied by only the most dapper and capable of modern automobiles. Combined with inescapable media hype – that world record time of 07:29 around the Nürburgring was certainly hard to ignore – and the fact that is was chosen as one of the headlining cars in Gran Turismo 5, this new Nissan GT-R comes loaded with more kudos than all of its predecessors combined. And, quite unbelievably, it lives up to every single one of them in real life.

From the second you see this motoring luminary in the steely flesh, come to grips with its unexpectedly large proportions, you just know that – like the city that influenced it – it’s going to etch itself into your psyche forever more. Of course on the inside, despite the presence of that brilliant Multi-Function Display that measures everything from lateral g-forces and turbo-boost, it’s possible to be left somewhat underwhelmed by the cabin’s general lack of excitement; those poorly disguised working class roots. But once you awaken that engine and take off down the road, all is forgiven, as you’ll find out very quickly that few cars in this world are as savagely rapid.

Accompanied by a sound reminiscent of shredding metal, the GT-R’s twin-turbocharged V6 allows you accelerate like a jet fighter and soon hit the sort of speeds that’ll put you in a complicated legal battle for the next three years of your life. As a driver you can’t believe something can be this effortlessly fast and, as a passenger, you wonder how your neck muscles will survive the intense levels of thrust that accompany each 100-millisecond gear shift. Yet, as epically fast as the whip-lashing GT-R may be, the way it hooks through corners is even more impressive. Feeling like what I can only describe as a car with magnetized wheels running along a sheet of steel, this Nissan really sticks to asphalt with a reassuring ease; an ease that makes you want to push harder than you’ve ever dared push between four wheels. And when you do – believe me, it’s inevitable – the GT-R acts in a way that makes you feel like one of the four demigod racing drivers chosen to hone this machine to perfection around Nissan’s Tochigi test track; one hell of an accomplishment in a useable, everyday car priced at just over R1-million.

Rest assured that if they were still around, the Mid Night Club would flip their lids for the Nissan GT-R. The perfect embodiment of Japanese style and a showcase of the island’s technological prowess, this would be the machine that most of their members would own the night with; a car capable of taking their dark art to a new level of hardcore extremes. But seeing as they’re not, this just means that a lot more of these über-Nissans will be heading our way. And I for one certainly am not complaining.

2011 Infiniti M56 First Drive

The Shape of Things To Come

Remember Zevolution? It was a derogatory term in the car biz that described the gradual, inexorable inflation of a car's curb weight and silhouette, predicated on the Nissan Z-car's propensity to swell with each successive generation. Zevolution does to cars what foie gras does to your waistline.

That was years ago, when a looming coronary prompted the Z's caretakers to stem these deleterious effects of aging. Still, Zevolution left a bad taste in the mouths of sports car snobs and the term lives on.
Oddly enough, here we are with another Nissan cum Infiniti, the 2011 Infiniti M56, and the situation is eerily familiar. Increased weight. A bigger shadow. More to love, we hope, as we approach the taped-up test cars we will be driving during a sneak preview in Southern California.

Larger, Swoopier
Based on the second-generation FM platform that currently underpins the Nissan 370Z and Infiniti's FX50 and G37, the new 2011 Infiniti M56 introduces minor changes in overall length and height compared to its predecessor, while the front track increases 1.4 inches and the rear by 0.8 inch.

More significant, Nissan has widened the M by 2 inches and kept the same wheelbase as before. Thus the 2011 M56 suggests "premium" in the way that only a more spacious cabin can.

The soft, flowing lines of the redesigned M series are deadly effective at two things. One, they create visual ties to the Essence showcar (as well as the slightly smaller G37 sedan), and two, they instantly make the 2009 M appear dated, narrow and even a bit frumpy. That car's featureless flanks are replaced by a seductively curved midsection. Gone are the awkwardly oversize taillights. The 2011 Infiniti M56 is elegant and easy on the eyes, though some might miss the brash chunkiness of the old M.

Featuring a seven-speed automatic transmission, the M56's powertrain is unquestionably capable.

Sold as the Nissan Fuga in Japan, this 2011 model of Infiniti's competitor for the BMW 5 Series is the first M to be sold in Europe, where it will be available with a diesel. Don't get your hopes up that the oil-burner will be sold Stateside, though.

Direct-Injection V8
Infiniti's suggestive model naming convention remains intact with the new M series, and in the 2011 Infiniti M56 this spells a 5.6-liter V8 that produces 420 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque according to Nissan's preliminary numbers.

If you've been paying attention, this represents an increase of 1.1 liters and nearly 100 hp compared to the erstwhile M45's 4.5-liter V8. Lesser M37 models are equipped with the familiar VQ37 3.7-liter V6, churning out 327 hp (24 hp more than the current V6-powered M) and 269 lb-ft of torque.

The corporate VK engine architecture forms the basis of the M56's V8, which exists elsewhere in 5.0-liter and 5.6-liter form in the Infiniti FX50 and the company's trucky applications. The difference lies in the numerous details, starting with unique cylinder heads on the M56's power plant that feature direct injection and variable valve timing and lift. Nissan's eggheads report that these measures make the new V8 some 10 percent more efficient than the outgoing 4.5-liter lump despite the large increase in displacement.

Featuring a seven-speed automatic transmission, the M56's powertrain is unquestionably capable. Gearchanges are fluid and smooth and there's ample torque across the rev range. The way this hardware pairing goes about moving the big sedan is unobtrusive and effective, though more of the right kinds of sounds — an intake note or a bit of exhaust burble, perhaps — would be fine with us. We like a bit of sizzle to go with our steak.

Agility Belies Its Size
Nissan reckons the 2011 Infiniti M56 offers class-leading interior space, and we couldn't find any evidence to dispute this. And while greenhouses continue their miniaturization act elsewhere in the motoring world, the M's beltline throws this trend a French curve — outward visibility is refreshingly panoramic, at least from the front chairs. The open cabin layout, similar in philosophical concept to the current car, serves to emphasize the sense of volume inside.

Mildly revised rear suspension geometry affords more lateral stiffness, and although four-wheel steering is available, it differs slightly from the system offered on the G37 in the interests of functional transparency. Indeed, when lobbing the M from apex to apex on some of Southern California's best driving roads, this big sedan shrinks around you. Its steering weights up less abruptly than in other Nissan and Infiniti sedans, and it exhibits a willingness to change direction that is downright feline for its size.

The lighter V6 in the nose of the M37 lends the chassis even more spryness, and the adaptive behavior of the seven-speed transmission as paired to the V6 is simply brilliant. We'd go so far as to say that in this stage of development, the M37x we drove — even in all-wheel-drive guise — gets the nod over the M56 as the more engaging drive.

We were driving development mules, however, and Nissan's engineers were still in the process of fine-tuning the M's character at the time of our drive. We've since been told that the personality of production versions of the 2011 Infiniti M56 will be enhanced through revisions to the throttle and transmission calibrations, and that they're taking another pass at its aural signature.

More Sport, Less Stink
M models equipped with the Sport package will receive sexy 20-inch wheels with 245/40R20 summer tires, firmer springs and dampers, bigger brakes with four-piston calipers and the aforementioned four wheel-steering. Unique interior trimmings for Sport models include seats and gear selector, plus a steering wheel equipped with shift paddles. Even so, the M56 doesn't forget it's a luxury car — the Sport package's underpinnings absorb the harsh thumps of crappy roads gracefully.

Likewise, the M56's technology credentials check all the right boxes for a modern luxury sedan. Available features include lane departure correction, various settings for the powertrain's snappiness, intelligent cruise control and a blind-spot intervention system. There's even an air-conditioning system called Forest A/C that actively neutralizes stinky odors, modulates humidity and creates an oscillating breeze. You know, like in a forest.

More of a Good Thing
The 2011 Infiniti M56 reaches dealerships next spring, and with it you'll be getting more car for roughly the same money (although official pricing hasn't yet been announced). We'll have to reserve final judgment for when we drive the finished product, but our early experience suggests that most of the right notes have been struck. And it's all in a wrapper that is sure to bring new blood to the Infiniti fold.

More space, speed, shape and cutting-edge technology. It turns out we don't mind a little Zevolution when it comes to luxury sedans. In fact, we embrace it.

Edmunds attended a manufacturer-sponsored event, to which selected members of the press were invited, to facilitate this report.

World's first Nissan GT-R police car enters service

It's not a wise idea to run from the police in any case, but this is especially true if you're being chased by the world's first Nissan GT-R police car.

Entering service with the force in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, this 485-horsepower supercar made its world debut at the recent Formula One Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The iconic Nurburgring-thrashing supercar is one of the fastest cars in the world, holding the record for the fastest four-seat production car in terms of acceleration. It can sprint from zero to 100 kilometres an hour in just 3.5 seconds.

Nissan Leaf Test Drive, Can Nissan Build Enough?

Nissan Leaf EV has made headlines for some time now and for good reason. This vehicle will become the first mass produced EV by a major automaker when its officially launched next year. Just weeks ago the Leaf kicked off its North American tour with a launch on the West coast. The vehicle will travel throughout the U.S. as a way to garner attention from potential buyers.

Dan Neil of the LA Times had an opportunity to drive the Leaf prototype at Dodger Stadium. His review of the vehicle speaks well of the progress EVs have made and the level of refinement that Nissan has achieved with the Leaf. As Neil states, "This level of refinement, which is such a struggle to achieve in conventional cars, is a birthright of electric cars. In the Leaf -- an all-electric, five-passenger car that will start hitting American streets in late 2010 -- you step on the accelerator and the car spools out velocity in one continuous, syrupy stream. It's nothing short of elegant."

Though his drive of the Leaf was but a short stint in a controlled environment, the words of praise from Neil are endless. At one point Neil compares the Leaf to a BMW, the pinnacle of sporty, refined automobiles as Neil said, "In the case of a BMW twin-turbo 3.0-liter engine, for example, maximum torque comes at 1,400 rpm and doesn't start to go away until 5,000 rpm. The BMW engine is, in other words, more like an electric motor. In fact, an EV's motor produces maximum torque at 0 rpm and maintains consistent torque across most of its operating speed range. That's what makes EVs such little hot rods -- loads of off-the-line quickness and mid-range punch."

Neil drove the Leaf prototype, which is the Leaf powertrain wrapped in the bodywork of a Nissan Versa. Therefore, he had no opportunity to review the completed car and instead focused on driving dynamics. Immediately apparent was the instant off the line acceleration. The vehicle went from 0 -40 mph in an estimated 5 seconds and its instant torque made the vehicle feel similar to a sporty car. As Neil said, "During my all-too-brief drive, the Leaf prototype, with three people on board, shot across the stadium parking lot like it had been pinged with a BB gun."

The Leaf's official debut is about one year away with a global launch about 2 years away. Many still question whether or not consumers will be able to adapt to the range limitations of EVs and whether or not they will be able to overcome range anxiety. If these issues can be put to rest, EVs are exceptional vehicles that drive like a modernized conventional car. They accelerate with smooth, instant power and offer up gobs of torque instantly. Their simple drivetrains make them easy to repair and relatively less complex to create than any hybrid model.

Small issues aside, EVs are ready for primetime. As Neil said after driving the Leaf, "The Leaf is definitely Car 2.0. Sweet, glycerin smooth, techy, frisky and even a little bit beautiful. It just feels like tomorrow. Perhaps the question is not "Will people buy them?" but "Can we build enough?"

Nissan GT-R Chrome, White, and Matte Black Car Wraps

Here we have an extreme tuning enthusiast who took his Nissan GT-R and wrapped it matte white at first, then decided to wrap it in chrome! It’s a little ridiculous in my opinion and definitely flashy, but the matte white looks good with the black wheels. It’s amazing what some people will pay to customize their car, the matte white car wrap alone costs $2,640. The chrome was even more expensive and took almost two weeks to complete the Nissan GT-R. The guy who wrapped his in chrome has a friend who also wrapped his GT-R in the common matte black which always looks good.

Both of the Nissan’s had their wheels painted, the matte black GT-R had the calipers painted white and the license plate positioned on the right side of the front bumper. The chrome Nissan GT-R has a few performance parts installed, including a Milltek Y Pipe, HKS catback exhaust, and HKS dump pipes. Matte black for the win here, but it will be interesting to see what’s next on the market of car wraps.

2010 Nissan Cube Pricing Announced; New Content to S, SL, and Krom Models

You won't find any drastic price changes to the 2010 Nissan Cube, but depending on the model, you may find some extra content...

A base Cube model, complete with a six-speed manual, still stickers at $14,710 including $720 in destination charges. You will, however, see a $340 price jump on both the Cube S ($15,750) and Cube SL ($17,850). Both models now come standard with Bluetooth phone connectivity, iPod connections, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. These features were previously options on 2009 Cube SL models, and weren't even available on the Cube S trim level.

The Cube Krom continues to be the top-of-the-line Cube, but a 2010 model will set you back $20,850. The $760 increase adds a 4.3-inch display as part of the audio system, which is also tied to a new rear-view camera. Keyless entry and ignition are now standard as well.

2010 Cube models should be arriving at dealers shortly.

Renault-Nissan boss believes EV evolution will be slow

Renault-Nissan CEO, Carlos Ghosn, says he expects the spread of electric vehicles around the world to be a gradual one, predicting internal combustion and hybrid units will continue to dominate for decades.

Ghosn, speaking in New York today, said he believed all-electric vehicles would make up just 10 per cent of the sales by 2020.

“[Electric cars] are not going to take the world by storm. Electricity is going to compliment oil,” he said.

He said Renault-Nissan’s focus was on electric vehicles in the future, believing that the company can establish itself as an industry leader just as Toyota has with hybrids.

Nissan’s venture into the plug-in market begins next year with a limited run of its Leaf hatchback before launching into global mass-production in 2012.

More than 25,000 people have expressed their interest in the Leaf through Nissan’s website as the car continues its world tour, currently winning over fans in the US.

Ghosn expects China and India will also become major markets for electric vehicles, needing zero-emissions vehicles to control carbon levels as the number of car owners skyrockets.

nissan-leaf-ev-rear

The Leaf’s energy comes from a lithium-ion battery pack and it is powered by an electric motor capable of 80kW and 280Nm.

A full eight hour charge from a regular power point fuels it for around 160km, while an 80 per cent charge can be achieved in just 30 minutes.

In August, Nissan Australia confirmed the Leaf would be among the first fleet of all-electric cars down under when it arrives in 2012.

Nissan GT-R SpecM still in the works

We’ve been hearing about the Nissan GT-R SpecM for some time now. The car was rumored to debut at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show last month but instead we saw an upgraded 2011 Nissan GT-R with some minor enhancements. Nonetheless, Nissan says that the SpecM is still in the works.

The man behind the R34 M-Spec, Kazutoshi Mizuno, told Inside Line that Nissan always planned on doing a GT-R SpecM after it released the SpecV. Like the first SpecM, the new one will also have a smoother ride, which will make the supercar more comfortable on everyday roads. Basically, it will focus on being a road car first and a track car second.

Prices of the Nissan GT-R SpecM are expected to be more than the hardcore GT-R SpecV. The release is reported to be scheduled for early next year.
